Device Has No Audio - Blu-ray

The absence of audio coming from your sound system can be frustrating, but the steps below will help to find and resolve the issue.

Note: If the system does not power on, refer to Device Has No Power.
Note: If the system speakers play sound, but your wireless subwoofer does not, refer to Connecting Your Wireless Subwoofer.

Do you have a stand-alone Blu-ray player, or is it built-in to an LG Home Theater System?

Before troubleshooting, please ensure the following conditions are met:

  • If possible, test the sound device (TV or Home Theater System) with a different input to ensure the volume is at an adequate level, and is indeed working.
  • Check that the sound device is tuned to the proper input. The audio wire should be connected into the corresponding audio-in port.
  • Test the media you're trying to watch in a different device to make sure the audio is working properly elsewhere.

  1. Does the Blu-ray Player's video play?
(only the audio is missing?) Yes No
    • Make sure the Blu-ray Player is powered on. If it will not power on, refer to Device Has No Power.
    • Make sure the sound device (TV or Home Theater System) is powered on, tuned to the correct input, and that the wires are securely plugged in.
    • Try a different cable (usually HDMI), your wire may have stopped working.
    • If the issue persists, Scedule a Repair.
  2. Are you using a separate wire for your audio?
(HDMI carries audio and video, optical/digital coaxial carry sound only) Yes No
  3. Using a separate audio wire implies the use of a Home Theater System, Sound Plate, or Sound Bar.

    • Make sure the Audio device is set to the correct input.
    • Try a different audio cable, your cable may have stopped working.
    • Try to hook the Blu-ray Player directly to the TV, or try to hook the audio cable to a different sound device.
    • Try to unplug the Blu-ray Player, then plug it back in.
    • On the Blu-ray Player, access Settings > Audio > Digital Output, then test the different options to find the one that works best with your audio equipment.
    • If the issue persists, Scedule a Repair.
  4. Are you using Private Sound Mode? Yes No What is this?
  5. Private Sound mode will only play through the mobile device it is enabled on, and not through the sound system.

    • Disable Private Sound mode.
    • If you intend to use Private Sound mode, but are not getting sound through your mobile device.
      • Restart your wireless router (unplug it, then plug it back in).
      • If the issue persists, disable Private Sound mode to check if the audio system functions normally in other modes.
      • If the sound system functions in other modes, contact your mobile device's manufacturer for assistance.
      • If the unit does not play sound in other modes, keep Private Sound mode disabled and change your answer above to NO.
  6. Private Sound mode is available on select devices and requires the LG AV Remote App. This mode allows you to play your sound system's audio through your mobile device (similar to wireless headphones).
  7. Is the media you are listening to in Scan, Slow Motion, or Pause mode? Yes No What is this?
  8. Change the mode to normal playback.

  9. Scan, Slow Motion, and Pause are special playback modes in which the media plays back in specific ways. If your video or sound file is playing normally (except for the sound), you are not in one of these modes.

  10. Are the audio wires properly connected? (if playing from an external source)
     Yes No
  11. Connect the audio wires according to the image above.

  12. Do you have the sound system set to the proper input/function? Yes No What is this?
  13. Set the input on the audio device correctly (make sure the input shown on the system's display matches the input label where the wire is plugged in).

  14. Most sound systems are capable of playing back media from several sources, but can only do so from one source at a time. Press the Input or Function button on your remote to cycle through these sources.

  15. With everything above set properly, try these last troubleshooting steps:

    • Check the TV's sound output mode to ensure the internal speakers are set to ON and that the volume is not muted.
    • Try to unplug the Blu-ray Player, then plug it back in again.
    • Test the A/V cable on a different device, or try to use a known working cable on this Blu-ray Player.
