LG Microwave - Arcing or Sparking

Troubleshooting

Arcing or Sparking

 Symptom

Arcing or Sparking

 How to fix

Is the unit empty?

The microwave should NEVER be operated empty. This is because there must be something inside the unit to absorb the microwaves or the cavity will be burned/scorched. Place a cup of water in the microwave and “cook” for 30 seconds. If no sparking, then it is okay to continue use.

Does the unit have a metal rack?

If the unit comes with a metal rack, be certain that the rack is installed properly on all four of the support brackets. If not, sparking can occur. The brackets are plastic to prevent this from happening, but if not installed properly and the rack touches the wall inside, sparking will occur.

Are cookware and/or utensils
approved for MWO use?

Not all cookware and utensils should be used in microwaves. Some, especially metal, can cause sparking to occur in cavity. Do not use anything in the mwo that is not microwave safe. This includes metal utensils, wire twist ties, etc. Damage to the interior cavity can occur.

Is the interior cavity clean and
free from food debris?

If not cleaned, food crumbs can “overcook” and cause sparking. Clean food spills immediately and keep interior of unit clean. Be certain that no damage has occurred to interior of cavity prior to using unit after this has occurred.

Is the interior cavity of the unit
damaged, rusted, scratched?

If the inside of the unit has any damage to the finish, sparking and arcing can occur. If this is the case, discontinue use immediately and seek service.
