[LG TV Caption] Subtitles do not work with movies streaming from a USB storage

Troubleshooting

Issue: Subtitle Fails to Play Despite Matching File Names

If the video and subtitle files share the same name but the subtitles fail to play, there could be a problem with the subtitle file itself. Additionally, even if the video plays on your computer, the TV may not support subtitles if the video file's codec is incompatible.

Possible Causes:

  1. Codec Compatibility: TVs typically support only up to 85% of the codecs available on a computer due to memory limitations. The video/audio file will only work on the TV when the codec, resolution, and file extension are compatible.
  2. Subtitle Encoding: The subtitle file may not be properly encoded, particularly if it uses a non-ANSI format.

File Limitations:

  • Video File Size:
    • HD: 30 GB or less
    • SD: 4 GB or less
  • USB Device: Up to 32 GB
  • External Storage: Up to 1 TB

Steps to Resolve the Issue:

  1. Check and Convert Codecs:

    • Use a video encoding program to change the video resolution or codec if necessary.
    • Search for free video encoding programs online.
  2. Ensure Subtitle File Encoding is Correct:

    • Check if the subtitle file is encoded in ANSI format.
    • To change the encoding, open the subtitle file in Windows Notepad, go to Save As, and select ANSI format before saving.
  3. Test SMI Subtitles:

    • If using SMI subtitles, note that playback is limited in DLNA mode. Consider converting to another format.

Conclusion: By ensuring that the video and subtitle files are compatible in terms of codec, resolution, and file format, and that the subtitle is properly encoded, you can resolve playback issues and enjoy subtitles correctly on your TV.
