FAQs
How does a kitchen rangehood work?
A rangehood, sometimes called a rangehood canopy, uses a fan to pull air, smoke, steam, grease and odours produced during cooking upwards into the hood. This air is then vented outside through ductwork (in the case of ducted rangehoods) or filtered and recirculated back into the kitchen (in the case of ductless models).
Rangehoods help keep your kitchen air clean and fresh, remove excess moisture that can build up on cabinets and improve cooking visibility by eliminating smoke and steam. They also help to remove airborne grease particles, which can contribute to a greasy film on surfaces throughout your kitchen.
What size rangehood do I need for my cooktop?
To ensure your rangehood effectively captures all the cooking fumes and odours, it should be at least the same width as your cooktop. For instance, a 600mm rangehood is ideal for a 600mm cooktop, and a 900mm rangehood is suitable for a 900mm cooktop. If you have a particularly powerful stove or do a lot of high-heat cooking, you might even consider a rangehood slightly wider than your cooktop for optimal ventilation.
Do rangehoods need to be ducted?
Not all kitchen rangehoods need to be ducted. There are two main types — ducted and ductless (also known as recirculating). Ducted rangehoods vent the air outside, while ductless rangehoods use filters to remove grease and odours and recirculate the filtered air back into the kitchen.
Ductless rangehoods are easier to install, making them a good option for kitchens where installing ductwork is difficult or impossible, such as apartments or kitchens with limited access to external walls. This also means more flexibility regarding placement within the kitchen. However, ducted rangehoods are generally more effective at removing odours, smoke and moisture, as they expel the air completely from the kitchen.
LG rangehoods are ductless and come with a recirculation Charcoal Filter to help remove odours and a Washable Aluminum Grease Filter to capture grease particles.
How do you install a rangehood?
Rangehood installation typically involves securing the hood to the wall or cabinetry above your cooktop and connecting it to a duct that vents outside. Rangehoods must be installed by a licensed and qualified electrician and carpenter, as it can involve electrical wiring and potentially some carpentry to ensure proper ventilation. Always refer to the manufacturer's instructions or manual for installation and safety of your specific model.
What is the difference between a chimney hood and a canopy hood?
Chimney hoods and canopy hoods are both popular types of rangehoods, but they differ in their design and installation:
● Chimney Hoods — These hoods are mounted to the wall and feature a distinctive chimney-like structure that extends to the ceiling. They offer a modern, stylish look and are often used in kitchens with a contemporary design aesthetic.
● Canopy Rangehoods — These hoods are installed under a cabinet above the cooktop and are typically more compact than chimney hoods. They offer a discreet, integrated look that blends seamlessly with your kitchen cabinetry.
