Understanding Noises From an LG Refrigerator
Occasional noise during operation of an LG refrigerator is normal due to its various
components.
Use the buttons below to hear different
noises from the refrigerator, understand their causes, and learn how to fix them.
※ The audio of the recordings has been amplified for clear distinction.
Common noises
Tapping, hissing, gurgling water noises
The operation of the cooling motor (compressor) causes oil and refrigerant flow, which
can result in tapping,
hissing or gurgling sounds, similar to the sound of water flowing through a drain
pipe.
These are typical sounds
associated with the functioning of a refrigerator.
Cracking, snapping noises
As the refrigerator temperature changes, thermal contraction/expansion occurs, resulting
in noises such as snapping, cracking, clicking.
This can be compared to the cracking sound you hear when ice melts.
Dripping and hissing noises
The defrost cycle runs one to two times a day.
The dripping noise you hear is melting ice falling onto the floor.
When water droplets come into contact with the heater and evaporate, hissing noises may
be heard, similar to the
noise made when water droplets sizzle in a hot pan.
Whooshing noises
When you open the refrigerator door, warm air from outside enters the fridge and
cools.
This causes a temporary pressure difference inside the refrigerator.
As a result, air inside escape through the drain tube at the back of the refrigerator,
making whooshing, hissing sounds.
Abnormal noises
Humming noises
If the side or rear of the refrigerator is touching a cabinet or wall, the vibration of
the compressor may cause rattling noises.
Please ensure that the refrigerator is installed at an appropriate distance from the
cabinet or wall.
Additionally, vibrations of the compressor may cause rattling noise if the refrigerator
is not installed level.
Use the height adjustment screws to level the refrigerator.
Check that the refrigerator is installed on an even floor, and move the unit to a
location with an even floor if necessary.
※ Should the noise level become uncomfortable or excessive, please request service for proper diagnosis.
Rattling, drilling noises
Sounds akin to rattling or drilling might be heard when the appliance is shifted or when
the door is swung open or shut with force.
This sound results from the internal components of the compressor and its outer casing
hitting against each other.
It's a transient noise that occurs when a working compressor is jostled, and it doesn't
signify a product defect.
However, if the noise persists to the point of causing discomfort or becomes overly
loud, please request service.
Steady thudding, whirring noises
If there is an interfering object in the fan or the circulation motor itself
malfunctions or freezes, abnormal noises of steady thudding and whirring may
occur.
In such instances, the ice around the circulation motor needs to be removed.
This can be achieved by leaving the power cord unplugged for approximately one day
during summer and three days in winter.
However, if you are worried about the food inside the fridge, please request service.
※ Noise that causes discomfort during use or that originates from a product defect can be difficult to rectify with simple measures.
