There's a reason Florida is called "The Sunshine State."1 Aside from experiencing an abundance of sunshine all year long, Florida also provides a great environment for installing solar power. Best of all, there are multiple incentives to help you improve your relationship with the sun.

As a resident of Florida, you may be eligible for various incentives that are available at the local, state and federal levels. These incentives were developed as a way to promote clean and renewable energy to homeowners within the United States. They help offset the initial cost that investing in solar power can have. Let’s take a more in-depth look at these incentives.

State of Florida Solar Incentives

  • The State of Florida provides a clean energy exemption for residents who invest in solar power. Because of this, you will not have to pay sales and use tax for your solar power system.2 You may have to provide the necessary documentation to the seller in order to qualify, so make sure you ask the retailer what you need before you buy.3

Local Solar Incentives

Depending on where in Florida you live, you may also be able to capitalize on additional solar incentives, for example:

  • Homeowners in the City of Tallahassee have a bonus financing option. They are eligible for loans of up to $20,000 that can be paid back over a period of up to 10 years.4

Additional Solar Incentives Available in Florida

Net metering

  • Net metering is a program that allows you to share the renewable energy your system generates with other homes. In return, the utility company will pay the homeowner either money or energy credits they can use to purchase energy from the grid when the solar system isn't producing power (such as at night). Net metering is currently available throughout the state of Florida, allowing you to share the sun's love with your neighbors.6

PACE Financing

PACE (Property Assessed Clean Energy) Financing is a program that will loan the entire cost of an eligible energy upgrade to a homeowner. The loan can then be repaid over a period of up to 20 years without any extra bills to keep track of. The cost is just added to your property tax bill.7 The following companies currently have residential PACE Financing available in Florida:

- Counterpointe Energy Solutions and Florida PACE Funding Agency/Alliance NRG Program
- Ygrene Works/Ygrene Energy Fund
- RenewPACE/Renew Financial
- Solar and Energy Loan Fund8, 9

Federal Incentives: Act Now to Get the Most Benefit

As a way to promote clean and renewable energy, the federal government has put in place two nationwide solar incentives that are available to Florida residents.   • The Federal Solar Tax Credit allows Americans in any state to deduct 26% of the cost of their residential solar installation from their federal taxes, dollar for dollar, through the end of 2020. The ITC then steps down to 22% for projects that begin construction in 2021. After 2021, the residential credit is scheduled to drop to zero, although a commercial and utility credit will remain.10 So lock in your ITC advantage by going solar now!
  • Customers of a public utility can save money at tax time because the money, credits or subsidies they earn are not taxable.11
