Solar Incentives in New York State

Local Solar Incentives

Some municipalities in the state offer additional incentives for those looking to improve their relationship with the sun. Find out what is available in your community.

  • Areas of New York State can adopt a tax exemption for solar, wind or farm waste energy systems for 15 years. This is a local option available until the end of 2024.6
  • Municipalities in New York State have access to the "Model Solar Energy Local Law". This is in place to assist them in regulating solar energy systems since the state government doesn't have any authority over projects under 25 megawatts.7

The Transition from Net Metering to Value of Distributed Energy Resources

New York is moving away from net metering, a system that allows you to sell excess renewable energy that you create back to your utility company. However, a similar system is taking its place. The new tariff, called the "Value of Distributed Energy Resources," or "VDER," works very similarly to net metering, while also taking factors into account such as your system's location and the time the energy is generated. This helps when calculating the amount you will be paid for the energy you sell.9

PACE Financing

You may have heard of PACE (Property Assessed Clean Energy) Financing, and be wondering whether you are eligible.10 New York does not offer PACE financing at the residential level - only at the commercial level.11

Federal Incentives: Act Now to Get the Most Benefit

As a way to promote clean and renewable energy, the federal government has put in place two nationwide solar incentives that are available to New York residents. Homeowners should apply for them shortly after installation is complete. Your LG PRO installer can help you understand these incentives and how to apply.

  • The Federal Solar Tax Credit allows Americans in any state to deduct 26% of the cost of their residential solar installation from their federal taxes, dollar for dollar, through the end of 2020. The ITC then steps down to 22% for projects that begin construction in 2021. After 2021, the residential credit is scheduled to drop to zero, although a commercial and utility credit will remain.11 So lock in your ITC advantage by going solar now!
  • Customers of a public utility can save money at tax time because the money, credits or subsidies they earn are not taxable.12
