LG Dryer - Why Does My Dryer Have No Power?

Issues with an LG dryer not having power are typically caused by a tripped circuit breaker, a faulty electrical outlet, a power outage in the home, or in rare cases a unit that requires a repair.

To troubleshoot your power issue, select one of the conditions below.

  • 1 Check the drum light.

    If you dryer has a drum light (not all units do) open the dryer and see if the drum light inside is on. If the light is on but the unit will not power on, then the unit will require repair service. Please reach out to our 24/7 Chat Support for further assistance.

    2 Check the power connection.

    Make sure the power cord connections at the back of the unit and at the electrical outlet are both secure.

    3 Check the circuit breaker.

    Turn off the circuit breaker, wait for 5 seconds, then turn the breaker back on. Try to power on and start the unit. If the unit doesn’t power on, it will require service. Please reach out to our 24/7 Chat Support for further assistance.

    NOTE
    Gas units are usually installed on a single circuit breaker, while electric units use two. 
    4 Perform a hard reset.

    1. Unplug the dryer.

    2. While the dryer is unplugged, press and hold the [POWER/START] button for 5 seconds, then press and hold the [PLAY/PAUSE] button for 5 seconds.

    3. Plug the unit back in and check if the light and the dryer come back on.

  • 1 Check for an error code.

    If the control panel is displaying an error code or blinking lights, this may be an indicator that there is another problem preventing the unit from starting. If the dryer displays an error code, please visit our LG Error Codes for Laundry Dryer page for assistance with the specific error code.

    2 Check child lock.

    Child Lock prevents the dryer from starting by disabling the [START] button. This is not an error code rather an indicator that the feature is active.

    For most models, press and hold the key labeled [CHILD LOCK] for 3 seconds to disable the feature.

    3 Check if the drum turns.

    Press the [START] button and closely watch if the drum in the unit turns.

    If the drum turns, let the unit run for 30 seconds then open the door. If the drum is warm, the unit is working properly.

    3 Perform a hard reset.

    When the [START] button is pressed, if the processing window flashes and you see the time countdown on the display screen then the unit may require a repair service. Otherwise, perform a hard reset.

    How to perform a hard reset: Turn off the dryer's circuit breaker, unplug the dryer, while the dryer is unplugged and the circuit breaker is OFF, PRESS and HOLD the [POWER/START] button for 5 seconds, then hold down the [PLAY/PAUSE] button for 5 seconds. Plug the unit back in and turn the circuit breaker on.

  • This indicates there was a power outage.

    A PF error code can be resolved by doing a factory reset on the unit:

    1. Unplug the dryer.

    2. While the dryer is unplugged, press and hold the [START/PAUSE] button for 5 seconds, then hold down the [PLAY/PAUSE] button for 5 seconds.

    3. Plug the unit back in and try to perform a dry cycle.

  • A nP error code indicates there is no current being detected at the heater. This normally indicates a problem with the electrical wiring in the home.

    1 Check the power cord connection.

    Make sure the power cord is securely plugged into a grounded outlet matching the dryer's rating plate of 240V.

    2 Reset the circuit breaker.

    From the home's main, turn OFF the dryer's circuit breaker for at least 10 seconds to clear the power surge inside the breaker.

    3 Inspect the home outlet.

    If the nP error is displaying, the home's outlet may need to be checked by a licensed electrician in order to ensure the correct voltage is supplied to the dryer.

  • If the unit powers ON but is not heating or drying enough, or taking a long time to dry, please visit our article on dryers not heating or taking a long time drying for further troubleshooting steps.

    1 Check if unit restarts after shutdown.

    If the unit powers back ON after abnormal shutdown, the issue can be attributed to three factors:

    INTERRUPTED POWER: The cycle may have shut off due to an interruption of the power supply.

    SMALL LOADS: Small loads may also cause the cycle to end abruptly because the clothes will not brush against the sensors at the front of the drum. When the unit is unable able to sense the load, the cycle time will abruptly drop down to 15-20 minutes, then 6 minutes, then shut off. It may be better to add a few items to a small load or just select a SPEED DRY or TIMED DRY cycle.

    SENSOR: Residue on the sensors will prevent the unit from properly detecting the load and will cause the cycle to end early.

    NOTE

    2 Perform a hard reset.

    1. Unplug the dryer.

    2. While the dryer is unplugged, press and hold the [START/PAUSE] button for 5 seconds, then hold down the [PLAY/PAUSE] button for 5 seconds.

    3. Plug the unit back in and check if the drum light and the unit come back ON.

    NOTE
    Some power outlets are sometimes controlled by light switches on the wall. Ensure to turn the light switch ON.
