LG Laptop - Troubleshooting the Fingerprint Reader Not Working Properly

If Windows 10 is installed in a laptop with the fingerprint detection function, then you can select the [Windows Hello] menu and easily enable and use the fingerprint detection function.
If the fingerprint detection function fails, then try one more time to let the sensor detect the fingerprint.
Also check if the biometric detection setting is disabled in Windows.
If the fingerprint detection driver is not installed on laptop or if there is an error with the driver, the fingerprint detection might fail.

Causes and Symptoms

  • Sensor cannot fully detect the fingerprint.
  • Biometric detection setting is [Disabled].
  • Either the fingerprint detection driver is not installed on your system, or there is an error with the currently installed driver.

Does the fingerprint sensor detect the fingerprint properly?

➔ Place the finger right in the middle of the fingerprint sensor.

If the laptop has the fingerprint detection function, then the [Power] button has a fingerprint sensor mounted in it.
Place the finger in the middle of the sensor while maintaining levelness.
If your finger contacts the sensor perpendicularly, then the fingerprint detection might fail.
Please, note that if there is alien substance on the sensor or the finger has a cut injury, then the fingerprint detection might fail.

As shown in the below figure, if you do not place the finger accurately on the fingerprint sensor, the fingerprint detection might fail.
If the fingerprint is not fully detected, the screen will display an error message.
Release the finger and place the finger one more time on the sensor.

Is the biometric detection function for the laptop enabled?

➔ Switch [Biometric Detection Permitted Item] to [Enabled].

In Windows 10, if the [Biometric Detection Permitted Item] menu is set to [Disabled], then you cannot use the fingerprint detection function.
Refer to the following when you change the fingerprint detection setting.

Setting [Use Biometric Detection]
1. Simultaneously press the Windows and R keys at the left bottom of the keyboard to open the [Execute] window.
Enter [gpedit.msc] in the [Open] windows and click the [OK] button.
Enter [gpedit.msc] in the [Open] window and confirm, then click the description
2. When the [Local Group Policy Editor] window opens, select [Computer Configuration]-[Administrative Templates]-[Windows Components]-[Biometric] in the correct order.

3. After selecting [Biometric Detection], double click the [Use Biometric Data] icon and select [Enable] and click [OK].

Did you try as instructed but fingerprint detection failed?

➔ install the graphics driver again.

If the fingerprint detection driver is not installed on laptop or if there is an error with the driver, the fingerprint detection might fail.
In this case, install the graphics driver again.

Installing the fingerprint detection driver

1. When purchasing an LG product for the first time, you should run the LG Update Center program if it includes Windows or the LG DnA Center Plus program if it doesn't include Windows.
2. If you are unable to locate the LG Update Center or the LG DnA Center Plus program, you can access the LG Electronics website's Customer Support → Drivers and select [Laptop/Tab] from the [IT/Monitor] category and enter the model name.
After that choose the corresponding Windows version from the [Operating System (OS)] category and you can proceed to install either the LG Update Center or LG DnA Center Plus program.
