Incentives to Help You Go Solar in Massachusetts

There are plenty of reasons for residents of Massachusetts to invest in solar energy. The State offers incentives at multiple levels to help residents install solar power and earn rebates or other benefits.

Solar Incentives Available in the State of Massachusetts

  • Massachusetts has launched a program called the Solar Massachusetts Renewable Target Program (SMART).1 In order to be eligible for the SMART program, residents must be connected to one of the three investor-owned utilities in the state (Eversource, National Grid or Unitil). As people apply to this program, they will be placed in incentive blocks that gradually decline, so it is best to sign up early.2
  • MASS Solar Loans are also available to residents. Loans between $3,000 and $35,000 are available with an interest rate of 6% on a 10-year loan. Lenders (banks or credit unions) may offer loans up to $60,000. Low-income customers may be eligible for the "Interest Rate Buy Down" and see a maximum interest rate of 4.5%.3
  • Like many states, areas in Massachusetts have the option to create solar easements.4

Net Metering

Net metering is a system that allows you to share the renewable energy you create with other homes. Customers can sell any excess green energy their solar system generates back to the grid. The utility company will pay the homeowner money or energy credits they can use to purchase energy from the grid when the solar system isn't generating electricity (such as at night).

Net metering is currently available throughout the state.5

PACE Financing

Perhaps you have heard of PACE (Property Assessed Clean Energy) Financing, a program that will loan the entire cost of an eligible energy upgrade to a homeowner. It can then be repaid over a period of up to 20 years without any extra bills to keep track of. The cost is just added to your property tax bill.6

  • Residential PACE Financing is not currently available in Massachusetts.
  • The state is, however, developing a commercial PACE program.8

Federal Incentives: Act Now to Get the Most Benefit

As a way to promote clean and renewable energy, the federal government has put in place two nationwide solar incentives that are available to Massachusetts residents.   • The Federal Solar Tax Credit allows Americans in any state to deduct 26% of the cost of their residential solar installation from their federal taxes, dollar for dollar, through the end of 2020. The ITC then steps down to 22% for projects that begin construction in 2021. After 2021, the residential credit is scheduled to drop to zero, although a commercial and utility credit will remain.8 So lock in your ITC advantage by going solar now!
  • Customers of a public utility can save money at tax time because the money, credits or subsidies they earn are not taxable.9
