Incentives to Help You Go Solar in Nevada

There are plenty of reasons for residents of Nevada to invest in solar energy. It is one of the sunniest states in the U.S. and is ranked no. 6 by SEIA for solar based on the 14.24% share of solar in electricity as well as the number of existing installations (55,111).1 Besides this, the State offers incentives at multiple levels to help residents install solar power and earn rebates or other benefits.

We’ve compiled some solar incentive information for residents of Nevada who want to take advantage of current prices. Installing solar power can provide utility bill savings over time and is a positive step toward protecting the environment.

State Incentives

  • Solar easements may be created between the owner of the land next to a solar installation and the owner of the land the solar panels are on.2
  • The State voids any attachment to the deed of a home that prevents it from installing solar energy.3
  • The Solar Generations rebate program in Nevada offers an up-front incentive to systems up to 25kW, the incentive ranges from $0.20/watt-AC to $0.45/watt-AC depending on the type of customer.4

Net Metering

Net metering is a process that allows you to share the renewable energy you create with other homes. Customers can sell any excess green energy generated by their solar panels back to the grid. The utility company will pay the homeowner money or energy credits that can be used to purchase energy from the grid when their system isn't generating electricity (such as at night).

Net metering is available in Nevada; however, it is available in different tiers. The following rates apply to customers with a system capable of producing 25 kilowatts or less.

  • The first tier covers up to 80 megawatts (MW). If you fall within this you may be eligible to receive credits of 95 percent of the retail rate. This rate will then remain the same for the 20 years after your system is installed.
  • The second tier starts once the 95 percent tier is full. Members of this tier are eligible to receive credits in the amount of 88 percent of the retail rate. Similar to the first, this tier will be open until the people in it are producing 80 MW of solar power. This rate will then be locked in for 20 years.
  • The third tier becomes available after the first and second are full. This tier allows customers to receive 81 percent of the retail rate until the number of people in it are producing 80 MW. This rate is then locked in for this system (in its original location) for 20 years.
  • The fourth tier becomes available once the first three levels of net metering are filled. This fourth and final tier allows people to receive 75 percent of the retail rate for their distributed energy. As with the other three, this rate is then in place for 20 years following the installation, and has no capacity limit like the other tiers.5

The first 3 tiers are now full and the 4th tier is underway.

PACE Financing

PACE (Property Assessed Clean Energy) Financing, a program that will loan the entire cost of an eligible energy upgrade to a homeowner, who can then pay it back as part of their tax bill over a span of 20 years.6

PACE Financing is currently available for only commercial customers in Nevada.7

Federal Incentives: Act Now to Get the Most Benefit

As a way to promote clean and renewable energy, the federal government has put in place two nationwide solar incentives that are available to Nevada residents.   • The Federal Solar Tax Credit allows Americans in any state to deduct 26% of the cost of their residential solar installation from their federal taxes, dollar for dollar, through the end of 2020. The ITC then steps down to 22% for projects that begin construction in 2021. After 2021, the residential credit is scheduled to drop to zero, although a commercial and utility credit will remain.8 So lock in your ITC advantage by going solar now!
  • Customers of a public utility can save money at tax time because the money, credits or subsidies they earn are not taxable.9
